Top Editor Departs 'SLJ'
Staff -- School Library Journal, 8/1/2001
Julie Cummins, who took over as editor-in-chief of School Library Journal last October, will leave the magazine at the end of August. In announcing the move, SLJ Publisher Fred Ciporen called Cummins "a highly respected member of the children's library profession" who deserves recognition for her contributions to the field. Before joining SLJ, Cummins was longtime coordinator of children's services at the New York Public Library. She is a leader in the American Library Association (ALA), having chaired its Newbery and Caldecott committees. She is currently a member of ALA's executive board. Cummins won this year's Grolier Award, ALA's highest honor for a lifetime contribution to children's reading. She also has written two children's nonfiction books, The Inside-Outside Book of Libraries (Dutton, 1996) and Tomboy of the Air (HarperCollins, 2001).
