Denise Agosto was appointed to the faculty of Drexel University's College of Information Science and Technology. Agosto specializes in children's librarianship and multicultural literature.
Betty Marcoux, a longtime school librarian in the Tucson (AZ) Unified School District, was named clinical associate professor at the University of Arizona's School of Information Resources and Library Science.
Susan Riley, former board member of the Young Adult Library Services Association, is the new director of the Mt. Kisco (NY) Public Library. Riley is also a reviewer for School Library Journal.
ObituariesLibrarian, author, and activist Betty Bacon died June 6 at her home in Berkeley, CA. She was 86. In addition to her 20-year career as a children's librarian in Contra Costa and Sonoma counties, Bacon wrote several nonfiction books for young people and was well known for her dedicated support of human rights causes.
Tove Jansson, Finnish creator of the popular children's books featuring the Moomins, a family of trolls, died in Helsinki on June 27. She was 86. In 1966 Jansson received the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Medal.
Fred Marcellino, renowned bookjacket designer and creator of children's books, died on July 12. He was 61. His work includes the illustrations for Charles Perrault's Puss in Boots (Farrar, 1990), for which Marcellino received a 1990 Caldecott Honor.
