History in Sound and Pictures
Staff -- School Library Journal, 8/1/2001
Librarians and teachers know that students often respond better to sounds and pictures about important events than they do to text. While online and print encyclopedias include photos and sounds to support text articles, the AccuNet/AP Multimedia Archive has for several years featured large separate collections of photos, graphics, and audio files, as captured by Associated Press staffers, along with AP news stories. These downloadable photos, news stories, graphics, and sounds have now been assembled into a wide-ranging collection of media that AccuNet says is much more easily searchable by middle- and high-school students. The Multimedia Archive features more than 700,000 national and international historical and contemporary photos. The Graphics Database contains diagrams, maps, illustrations, and logos. The AP Audio and AP Text databases contain searchable audio clips and brief news stories dating back to the 1920s, with clips as recent as 48 hours after events.
