HONORABLE MENTION: Magic Windows/Ventanas mágicas

Staff -- School Library Journal, 8/1/2000

LOMAS GARZA, Carmen.
Magic Windows/Ventanas mágicas.
illus. by author. tr. from English by Francisco X. Alarcón. Children's Book Press. RTE $15.95. ISBN 0-89239-157-X.

An introductory note explains that the art of Mexican cut paper, or papel picado, goes back thousands of years when Aztec artists created bark paper banners. Lomas Garza first learned the art from her grandmother, who used cut paper to create embroidery designs, and she continues the tradition today with her own intricately designed cut-paper art. Each papel picado in this volume is accompanied by a brief explanation in both Spanish and English that reveals something about the artist's personal history and how it is linked to her Mexican heritage. (Gr 3-8)
