VA Library Filters Net for Kids and Adults
Staff -- School Library Journal, 12/1/1997
Loudoun County, VA, has a new claim to fame: a public library with what may be the country's most restrictive Internet policy. Late last month, the Loudoun County Public Library was about to start implementing a policy calling for filters on all Internet terminals. The terminals will be placed in front of reference desks so librarians can monitor customers' viewing. The library board member who wrote the policy -- which passed by a 5-4 vote -- said it was designed to protect customers from sexual harassment in the form of sexual images on computer screens. A number of groups are already investigating lawsuits against the library.
