What Was the Buzz at ALA's Midwinter Meeting?

At ALA's 1999 midwinter meeting, Michael Cart, a former president of theYoung Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), officially announcedYALSA's eagerly awaited plan to create a new award for young adultliterature -- one based solely on literary merit. The award -- which will be namedfor the late Mike Printz, a prominent school librarian and an expert onyoung adult literature -- will honor fiction and nonfiction books published foryoung readers through the age of 18. YALSA plans to announce its first awardwinner at ALA's midwinter meeting in 2000.
