Popular talk show host lashesout against ALA's stance on information access for children
Laura Schlessinger, the popular radio talk show host known as Dr. Laura, has attacked (April 15 show) ALA's opposition to the use of Internet filtering software on children's computers. She's also lambasted the Young Adult Library Services Association's Internet site, "Teen Hoopla" , geared toward 12- to 18-year-olds. One of Teen Hoopla's recommendations is a site called "Go Ask Alice" , which offers frank information on sexuality.
In the aftermath of Dr. Laura's attack on ALA, Toys 'R' Us has decided to cancel its plan to donate $250,000 to the association's Fund for America's Libraries--a decision that Dr. Laura applauds.
ALA President Ann Symons met with divisional presidents in Chicago May 16 to discuss the issue, but the association has so far not issued a formal response to Dr. Laura.
