New survey shows latest public library stats

Do you know how your library stacks up in terms of spending on children's services? You'll find that and other tidbits in the 2000 Statistical Report, recently released by the Public Library Association. Here's a sampling of the highest numbers in several youth-services categories, grouped according to population area.

Population: 1 million and over

Materials spending per child: $8.62, Brooklyn (NY) Public Library
Circulation: 6.7 million, County of Los Angeles Public Library
Program attendance: 510,229, County of Los Angeles Public Library
Internet stations: 966, Los Angeles Public Library

Population: 500,000 to 999,999
Materials spending per child: $21.32, Columbus (OH) Metropolitan Library
Circulation: 4.8 million, Montgomery County (MD) Department of Public Libraries
Program attendance: 331,856, Multnomah County (OR) Library
Internet stations: 221, Public Library of Cincinnati &
Hamilton County, OH

Population: 250,000 to 499,999
Materials spending per child: $9.30, Akron-Summit County (OH) Public Library
Circulation: 3.3 million, Santa Clara County (CA) Public Library
Program attendance: 199,998, Cumberland County (NC) Public Library
Internet stations: 191, Greensboro (NC) Public Library

Population: 100,000 to 249,999

Materials spending per child: $10.36, Alachua County (FL) Library
Circulation: $1.4 million, Central Rappahannock (VA) Regional Library
Program attendance: 128,346, Pasadena (CA) Public Library
Internet stations: 125, Peoria (AZ) Public Library
