2000 Library Association of the UK Awards: Lauren Child, a double nominee, received the Kate Greenaway Medal for I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato (Candlewick). Child was also nominated for Beware of the Storybook Wolves (Scholastic/Arthur A. Levine). The Greenaway Medal is presented annually for outstanding illustration in a children's book. Beverley Naidoo won the Carnegie Medal for her novel about asylum seekers, The Other Side of Truth (HarperCollins). Naidoo, a South African writer, was up against novels by Philip Pullman, David Almond, and Melvin Burgess—all former Carnegie medalists. The prestigious award recognizes an outstanding book for children.
2001 Children's Book Guild of Washington, DC, Award for Nonfiction: Recipient Jim Murphy won for his more than 25 books on American history, including The Great Fire (Scholastic), a 1996 Newbery Honor book. Cosponsored by the Washington Post, the annual award honors a significant contribution to the quality of children's nonfiction.
2001 Sanford Berman Social Responsibility Award: Gretchen Wronka, youth services coordinator, has been recognized for her work at the 26-branch Hennepin County (MN) Library system. The award is presented annually by AFSCME Locals 2864 and 2822, unions that represent the library's nonsupervisory and support staff.
2001 Geoffrey Bilson Award: This year's winner is Charlie Wilcox by Sharon E. McKay (Stoddart Kids). The award is presented by the Canadian Children's Book Centre to a Canadian author of an outstanding work of historical fiction for young people.
