Put Reading First

Staff -- School Library Journal, 1/1/2002

A free booklet presents the latest research on how to teach children to read successfully. Put Reading First: The Research Building Blocks for Teaching Children to Read. The booklet is available in two versions, one for educators, the other for parents. describes five aspects of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension, along with ideas for classroom instruction. The parent's guide, subtitled "Helping Your Child Learn to Read," suggests home and school activities to encourage literacy. Both booklets, published by the National Partnership for Reading, are available in print and online. For details, visit the National Institute for Literacy's Web site (www.nifl.gov).
