International Reading Association (IRA) 2002 Children's Book Awards Primary fiction (ages preschool–8): Silver Seeds: A Book of Nature Poems (Viking) by Paul Paolilli and Dan Brewer. Primary nonfiction :Aero and Officer Mike: Police Partners (Boyds Mills Press) by Joan Plummer Russell. Intermediate fiction (ages 9–13): Coolies (Philomel) by Yin. Intermediate non fiction: Pearl Harbor Warriors (Woodson House) by Dorinda Makanaonalani Nicholson and Larry Nicholson. Young adult fiction (ages 14–17): A Step From Heaven (Front Street) by An Na. Young adult nonfiction: Meltdown Race Against Nuclear Disaster at Three Mile Island: A Reporter's Story by Wilborn Hampton. Winners were honored at IRA's 47th annual convention in San Francisco, April 28–May 2, 2002.

2001 Américas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature A Movie in My Pillow (Children's Book Press) by Jorge Argueta, with illustrations by Elizabeth Gómez, won in the picture book category. The fiction winner is Breaking Through (Houghton) by Francisco Jiménez. Presented by the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs, the Américas Awards recognize books that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America or Latinos.
