Staff -- School Library Journal, 06/01/2002

Author Richard Peck received the 2001 National Humanities Medal in Washington, DC, on April 22. Peck and seven other winners were singled out for creating works that deepen the nation's understanding of the humanities. Peck was awarded the 2001 Newbery Medal for A Year Down Yonder (Dial) and received a Newbery Honor in 1999 for A Long Way From Chicago (Dial). President George W. Bush presented the medals, and the ceremony was followed by a private reception at the White House.
