Hail Seuss!

Staff -- School Library Journal, 7/1/2002

What better place to house a Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden than the birthplace of author-illustrator Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904–1991). The two-acre garden, which recently opened in Springfield, MA, includes 22 of Dr. Seuss's most famous characters, including the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, and the Grinch. Geisel's widow, Audrey, attended the May 31 opening ceremony, and unveiled a statue of Seuss at his drawing board. Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, Geisel's stepdaughter, was the sculptor for the $6.2 million project. Springfield is also the home of Mulberry Street, the setting for Seuss's first picture book, published in 1937.
