Making History Come Alive
Meg McCaffrey -- School Library Journal, 7/1/2002
The Library of Congress's American Memory Historical Collections site has two new online exhibits available at lcweb.loc.gov.
One collection, "Emile Berliner and the Birth of the Recording Industry," talks about this creative genius (1851–1929) who developed the microphone, flat recording disc, and gramophone player. Here are the roots of mass entertainment and audio technology. More than 100 sound recordings from the Berliner Gramophone Company are featured, including Buffalo Bill giving a speech.
The other collection focuses on Paterson, NJ, considered the nation's cradle of the Industrial Revolution. "Working in Paterson: Occupational Heritage in an Urban Setting" features interviews and photographs from the Library's American Folklife Center.
