"Big Bang" Makes the Cut

Meg McCaffrey -- School Library Journal, 8/1/2002

What do "big hair," "ladies who lunch," and "social cleansing" have in common? They and 1,764 other entries have been added to the online version of The Oxford English Dictionary . Other new entries include "drive time," "sustainable tourism," and "tough love." There's also a revised definition of "America" as a place one longs to reach.

OED.com is updated quarterly, says Don Myers, publicist for publisher Oxford University Press. Oxford lexicographers add new words and phrases to OED.com as part of their work toward the third edition of the print version of The Oxford English Dictionary , scheduled for release in 2010.

The OED.com site (www.oed.com) is a subscription service that starts at $795 per year.
