First Lady to Host Second National Book Fest
Staff -- School Library Journal, 9/1/2002
The second annual National Book Festival, hosted by First Lady Laura Bush, will take place October 12 at the U.S. Capitol. Sponsored by the Library of Congress, the festival will feature more than 70 award-winning authors, illustrators, and storytellers. It will include author readings and book discussions; performances by storytellers; book sales and signings; and appearances by children's storybook characters. Two pavilions devoted to "Children & Young Adults" are included with others on "Storytelling," "Fiction & Imagination," and "Mysteries & Thrillers." Players from the National Basketball Association and the Women's National Basketball Association's "Read to Achieve" program will also participate in one of the children's areas. A "Pavilion of States" will highlight state reading programs and local libraries. And "Let's Read America" will provide practical information about reading and literacy promotional activities throughout the country. The festival is free and open to the public.
