The Supreme Court voted 7–2 on January 15 to uphold the 20-year extension to all existing copyrights, which Congress passed in 1998 under the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act. The decision in Eldred v. Ashcroft is a victory for Hollywood studios and other large corporate copyright holders who stand to collect more than $400 million a year from images like Mickey Mouse and films such as Casablanca. Stanford law professor Lawrence Lessig argued that the decision and any future extensions had the potential to keep creative works under copyright for eternity.
