Apex Learning hopes to give precocious high school students a leg up on preparing for exams in Advanced Placement (AP) subjects. The online learning company, started by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, is offering an expanded AP exam review starting March 1. Three new AP subjects have been added to Apex's course list: French, biology, and psychology. Test preparation is also offered in macroeconomics, microeconomics, U.S. history, government and politics, calculus, chemistry, English literature and language, physics, statistics, and Spanish.

Schools may purchase a site license; prices, which start at $975 a year, are based on school or district enrollment. Registered students receive unlimited access to the exam reviews from the date of enrollment through June 1, 2003.

How does the exam service work? Students take an online diagnostic exam on the AP subject that they are studying. The test includes actual questions from previous AP exams. Students then receive a personalized study plan that identifies their weaknesses.
