Thrills and Chills

Add some muscle to your book collection

Daredevil is scheduled to arrive in movie theaters on February 14, and critics are already calling it the most successful Marvel Comics-based film to hit the big screen since Spider-Man. Daredevil (dubbed 'the man without fear') is the alter ego of Matt Murdock, who lost his sight and gained superhero powers while trying to save a blind man from colliding with a truck full of radioactive waste. Using his newfound powers, Murdock avenges his father's killers.

In his Daredevil tales, now compiled into three volumes, cartoonist Frank Miller revolutionized the way superhero stories were told. The following books for older teens are recommended for your graphic novel collection:

Meet the Artist

Jill Thompson

Author and illustrator Jill Thompson's Scary Godmother series, which focuses on Halloween, is a good fit for libraries. These colorful, well-produced books are about a young girl named Hannah, who is shielded from harm by her Scary Godmother. The books use a comic-book format but can be easily integrated into a picture book collection.

Thompson, a professional illustrator for more than 20 years, is best known for her work on Spider-Man, Sandman, and Wonder Woman. She says she created the Scary Godmother series because she felt that the graphic-novel format was underappreciated. Although these books closely resemble picture books, they are popular among comic-book aficionados. And the series is also appropriate for school and public libraries.

The Scary Godmother series includes Scary Godmother (Sirius Entertainment, 1997) $19.95. ISBN 1-57989-015-6; The Mystery Date: A Scary Godmother Story (Sirius Entertainment, 1999) $19.95. ISBN 1-57989-026-1; and The Boo Flu: A Scary Godmother Story (Sirius Entertainment, 2000) $19.95. ISBN 1-57989-038-5.
