Extra network connections

It seems like media centers and classrooms never have enough network outlets to accommodate all of the computers and printers that students need. Installing new cables is an expensive solution, and wireless systems are not always appropriate. The NJ100 Network Jack by 3Com offers a neat solution to this dilemma. The NJ100 is a four-port miniature switch that fits into any standard wall outlet. Simply plug an NJ100 unit into a single network connection and you've instantly quadrupled the number of available connections, or drops. What could be easier?

To expand your local area network (LAN) connections, simply plug the existing LAN cable into the back of an NJ100 unit. But keep in mind, the NJ100 needs electrical power. If your LAN already has its own power source, no other source is necessary. If not, you will need to make sure there's an AC adapter at the wall near the NJ100.

The NJ100 is ideal for adding additional LAN drops in older buildings and other hard-to-wire spaces. Since the unit is wall-mounted, it's secure and doesn't have as much cable clutter as tabletop switches. An optional pass-through plate lets users conveniently connect a phone or additional jacks to the NJ100 unit.

An NJ100 lists for $140 and at that price, it is a bargain. It's significantly cheaper than installing a cable connection. Moreover, if your connective needs change, the NJ100 can be easily moved from one location to another. If you need additional LAN connections, are on a tight budget, and desire some flexibility, I strongly recommend 3Com's NJ100 Network Jack. (3com also offers several other switches to increase the number of outlet connections.)
