Patricia MacLachlan, author of the 1986 Newbery Medal winner Sarah, Plain and Tall (HarperCollins, 1985), was among six individuals and two organizations awarded the National Humanities Medal for 2002 at a White House ceremony on February 27. President George W. Bush presented MacLachlan the medal for her "numerous critically acclaimed books for children of all ages."

The National Humanities Medal, first awarded in 1988 as the Charles Frankel Prize, honors individuals and groups whose works have deepened the nation's understanding of the humanities.
