Holes, a feature film based on Louis Sachar's Newbery Medal–winning novel (Farrar, 1998), will hit movie theaters nationwide on April 18. The film stars Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight, and Shia LaBoeuf (of television's Even Stevens), as the young protagonist, Stanley Yelnats. Sachar (above) wrote the screenplay and appears in a cameo role in the film. The novel, about an outcast sent to a boy's reform camp to dig holes, also received the 1998 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.
