Maurice Sendak and Austrian author Christine Noestlinger are co-winners of the first Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for literature. The two received the $553,000 prize from the Swedish government in March. Noestlinger is the author of the German-language children's books The Fiery Frederica and Conrad, the Factory-Made Boy. The award is named for Pippi Longstocking author Lindgren, who died last year at 94.
