The new Gryphon Award for Children's Literature, sponsored by the Center for Children's Books (CCB) at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, will focus on a little-recognized category—transitional books, those titles geared for kindergarten to fourth-grade children that bridge the gap between picture books and chapter books.

The first annual award, honoring the author of an outstanding English-language work of fiction or nonfiction, will be announced March 1, 2004. The award is named for CCB's emblem, a gryphon, designed by illustrator Trina Schart Hyman.
