While most kids his age were playing ball, Chas Duff, a 14-year-old from Chatsworth, CA, was busy transforming a locker room at a high school for juvenile offenders into the school's first library. In recognition of his work, the eighth grader at Sierra Canyon School was one of 10 recipients of the 2003 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which honor students ages 10–18 who perform exemplary volunteer efforts to aid people in difficult circumstances.

Duff, an avid reader who wanted to create a library as his Eagle Scout project, sought help from Los Angeles Unified School District officials to find the nearby William Tell Aggeler Opportunity High School for juvenile offenders. Duff set his sights on an appropriate space—an old locker room—then solicited donations of money, building materials, and skilled labor from local businesses and organizations. Due to open this month, the library will contain 4,000 new volumes purchased with a $50,000 state grant awarded to the school for juvenile offenders and another 1,000 books collected by Duff.
