Teen Brings Books to Juvenile Offenders
California 14-year-old wins award for creating library for troubled teens
Kathy Ishizuka -- School Library Journal, 6/1/2003
Duff, an avid reader who wanted to create a library as his Eagle Scout project, sought help from Los Angeles Unified School District officials to find the nearby William Tell Aggeler Opportunity High School for juvenile offenders. Duff set his sights on an appropriate space—an old locker room—then solicited donations of money, building materials, and skilled labor from local businesses and organizations. Due to open this month, the library will contain 4,000 new volumes purchased with a $50,000 state grant awarded to the school for juvenile offenders and another 1,000 books collected by Duff.
