Arizona Library School Saved

The University of Arizona's School of Information Resources and Library Science (SIRLS) in Tucson is no longer among a list of 16 programs to be eliminated. SIRLS's director, Brooke Sheldon, says the decision to keep the program was based on nationwide fund-raising efforts, coupled with "sustained and vocal support from alumni, employers, students, colleagues, and organizations." The efforts included a letter-writing campaign to legislative leaders, the university's president, and provost. Roughly $15,000 for scholarships was raised. SIRLS's Knowledge River program is known for focusing on library and information issues from the viewpoints of Hispanics and Native Americans.
