Dawn Vaughn, a library media specialist at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, CO, was chosen president-elect of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Vaughn says she plans to establish a cooperative relationship with the Association of College and Research Libraries to help K–12 students gain the research skills they'll need in college. "We need to know what universities need, we have to make ourselves indispensable, and we must provide the databases students need," she says.
Gretchen Wronka, youth services and outreach coordinator for Hennepin County (MN) Library, was voted president-elect of the Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC). Wronka plans to concentrate on developing literacy programs. "Children's literacy development and reading success are political and economic realities with long-term societal implications," says Wronka, who wants to continue partnering with the Public Library Association, which has worked with ALSC on making early literacy efforts in public libraries a priority.
David Mowery, a youth services division chief at Brooklyn Public Library, was elected president-elect of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). "We need more extensive dissemination and marketing of YALSA booklists," says Mowery, adding that he will focus on developing ways to motivate teens to read and strengthen links between public young adult librarians and schools.
