Encyclopedia Britannica has created a new resource in response to the growing demand for educational materials in Spanish. Enciclopedia Universal en Español is an online encyclopedia with more than 47,000 articles in Spanish, as well as 8,300 images. Just like its English-language counterpart, the encyclopedia covers a vast array of academic subjects, according to the publisher. But it also targets the history, culture, and key figures of Spain and Latin America. For example, there's coverage that you would expect, such as the Spanish-American War and General Francisco Franco. But there's also pop cultural info on actress Salma Hayek, the Mexican Oscar nominee. There's also plenty of general information on non-Hispanic subjects, such as the U.S. Bill of Rights.

The Spanish dictionary has 65,000 entries, and there are timelines covering general history. There's also a handy atlas that has a special focus on the distribution of languages and religions in major cities. For information about free previews available to qualified schools and libraries, call (800) 621-3900 or go to www.eb.com.
