Libraries and bookstores nationwide are gearing up for Banned Books Week with exhibits and readings that celebrate the freedom to read. The theme for this year's event, which runs from September 20–27, is "Open Your Mind to a Banned Book." Judith Krug, director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, says she hopes the festivities will remind Americans of the importance of the freedom to read "at a time when freedoms are being eroded in the United States."
