NEH Book Giveaway
Schools, libraries are invited to apply for book collection
By Kathy Ishizuka -- School Library Journal, 9/1/2003
The annual program, established this year in cooperation with the American Library Association (ALA), highlights books that celebrate themes related to American history. The 2003–2004 titles, chosen by a team of experts that include historian David McCullough and ALA President Carla Hayden, focus on courage. Selections range from The Cabin Faced West (Gr K–3) by Jean Fritz and The Dream Keeper and Other Poems (Gr 4–6) by Langston Hughes to Profiles in Courage (Gr 9–12) by John F. Kennedy.
Libraries that apply for the award are required to sponsor related programs—such as storyhours or dramatizations based on one of the donated books—and to promote the events within their communities, says Thomas Phelps of the NEH. If NEH receives an insufficient number of applications, a second round of submissions will be accepted from December 15, 2003 to February 15, 2004. We the People applications may be completed online at www.WethePeople.gov until October 22, 2003.
