Site of the Month: Port Libraria
By Walter Minkel -- School Library Journal, 9/1/2003
Debra Waugh (debwaugh@frontiernet.net), a librarian and technology instructor at Graham High School in Bluefield, VA, wanted "to give something back to the library community," so she's created Port Libraria, a personal Web site that offers ideas and materials to help her colleagues promote libraries to teachers and students.
Making a splash: A sample idea from the site is "Reading Splash," a colorful promotion for reading featuring bright blue waves and tropical fish that Waugh has used successfully at Graham. Waugh, who has graphic design experience, has taught a media arts class at Graham, as well as classes in Web site design and video production. She has also collaborated with a group of English, art, science, and social studies teachers on research projects for the last three years, and the group's ideas are posted on Port Libraria.
Aiming to expand: Waugh plans to add new items to the site throughout the coming school year, including ideas for book displays and bulletin boards. She also plans to post instructional worksheets for new users of the Windows graphics program Paint Shop Pro and a section on software that she recommends to promote libraries.
