Data Trends: Online Access Improves Academics
By Walter Minkel -- School Library Journal, 9/1/2003
Jackson studied 90 families in East Lansing, MI, with annual incomes of about $15,000 and no regular access to the Internet. As part of the study, their children received home computers, Internet connections, operating instructions, and technical support. After 16 months of Internet access, the children's grade point averages and standardized test scores improved. Internet use also appears to have no negative effect on kids' social abilities or mental health.
Jackson's preliminary findings were released in July. For more details, visit www.msu.edu/user/jackso67/homenettoo/main.html.
