President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act is already affecting large technology companies seeking to dominate the education market. Plato Learning and Lightspan, two major players in online assessment products, learning software, and professional development services, have merged to capitalize on products such as Lightspan's eduTest service, which has helped Florida students pass standardized tests, says Plato CEO John Murray.

Meanwhile, Discovery Communications, the parent company of the Discovery Channel, plans to acquire United Learning, a maker of audiovisual products and services such as Unitedstreaming, a Web-based video-streaming product. The move will allow Discovery to provide schools with digital content to improve student academic performance, says Discovery President Judith McHale.
