Stripling, Gorman vie for head of nation's library association

Barbara Stripling, a former school librarian and director of library programs for the nonprofit New Visions for Public Schools, is running for president of the American Library Association (ALA). Stripling, former president of the American Association of School Librarians, faces a formidable opponent in Michael Gorman, dean of library services at the Henry Madden Library at California State University in Fresno.

Gorman is well known to those in the library community for his lecturing at library conferences and for his books on librarianship, including Our Enduring Values (ALA Editions, 2000), which won the 2001 Highsmith Award.

However, many media specialists are rooting for Stripling, who has more than 20 years experience in public schools, most recently as the director of instructional services for the Fayetteville (AR) public schools. She says her primary goal as president will be to encourage all librarians to impart technology and Web-based literacy skills.
