Kirsten Underwood and Danielle Dreger, two Simmons College library students who are committed to working in public libraries in low-income areas of Massachusetts, have been awarded $16,560 each by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Underwood and Dreger, both full-time, first-year graduate students with plans to become children's librarians, will be mentored by individual public librarians. Dreger already mentors teens in a high school library, and Underwood works in the children's section of a public library.

The grant will pay for about five courses, or half the cost of their master's degrees.
