In addition to the companies included in our recent survey of library automation systems (see "A Smarter System," November 2003, pp.48–51), here's another manufacturer worth knowing about. Surpass Software makes the Surpass Library Automation System (SLAS), which can be configured as either a centralized system with a union catalog or one for an individual school. Either way, it's Web-based, runs on a Windows server, and includes customizable "Visual Navigator" software that allows catalog screens to link to school Web pages and documents such as PDF versions of the student handbook. SLAS also includes a report generator that allows librarians to design, format, and print documents such as age-of-collection reports by Dewey number and overdue reports by grade.
