Here's a list of the top awards for children's literature presented on January 12 at the American Library Association's midwinter meeting:

Newbery Medal: The Tale of Despereaux (Candlewick) by Kate DiCamillo.

Newbery Honor Books: Olive's Ocean (Greenwillow) by Kevin Henkes; and An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 (Clarion) by Jim Murphy.

Caldecott Medal: The Man Who Walked Between the Towers (Roaring Brook) by Mordicai Gerstein.

Caldecott Honor Books: Ella Sarah Gets Dressed (Harcourt) by Margaret Chodos-Irvine; What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? (Houghton) by Steve Jenkins and Robert Page; and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus (Hyperion) by Mo Willems.

Coretta Scott King Award for Writing: The First Part Last (S & S) by Angela Johnson.

King Writing Honor Books: Days of Jubilee: The End of Slavery in the United States (Scholastic) by Patricia and Frederick McKissack; Locomotion (Putnam) by Jacqueline Woodson; and The Battle of Jericho (S & S/Atheneum) by Sharon Draper.

Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration: Beautiful Blackbird (S & S/Atheneum) by Ashley Bryan.

King Illustration Honor Books: Almost to Freedom (Carolrhoda), illustrated by Colin Bootman and written by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson; Thunder Rose (Harcourt/Silver Whistle), illustrated by Kadir Nelson and written by Jerdine Nolen.

Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent (Author) Award: The Way a Door Closes (Henry Holt), written by Hope Anita Smith and illustrated by Shane Evans.

Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent (Illustrator) Award: My Family Plays Music (Holiday House), illustrated by Elbrite Brown and written by Judy Cox.

Michael L. Printz Award (for outstanding fiction for young adults): The First Part Last (S & S) by Angela Johnson.

Printz Honor Books: A Northern Light (Harcourt) by Jennifer Donnelly; Keesha's House (Farrar/Frances Foster) by Helen Frost; Fat Kid Rules the World (Putnam) by K. L. Going; The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things (Candlewick) by Carolyn Mackler.

Robert F. Sibert Award (for outstanding nonfiction): An American Plague: The True and Terrifying Story of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 (Clarion) by Jim Murphy.

Sibert Honor Book: I Face the Wind (HarperCollins) by Vicki Cobb.

Margaret Edwards Award (for lifetime contribution to literature for young adults): Ursula K. LeGuin, author of the Earthsea series and many other books.

Mildred L. Batchelder Award (for publisher of best translated book for young people): Walter Lorraine Books, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin, for Run, Boy, Run, originally published in Hebrew in 2001, written by Uri Orlev and translated by Hillel Halkin.

Pura Belpré Award for Writing: Before We Were Free (Knopf) by Julia Alvarez.

Pura Belpré Writing Honor Books: Cuba 15 (Delacorte) by Nancy Osa; My Diary from Here to There / Mi diario de aquí hasta allá (Children's Book Press/ Editorial Libros Para Niños) by Amada Irma Pérez.

Pura Belpré Award for Illustration: Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book (Chronicle) by Yuyi Morales.

Pura Belpré Illustration Honor Books: First Day in Grapes (Lee & Low), illustrated by Robert Casilla and written by L. King Perez; The Pot That Juan Built (Lee & Low), illustrated by David Diaz and written by Nancy Andrews-Goebel; Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez (Harcourt), illustrated by Yuyi Morales and written by Kathleen Krull.

May Hill Arbuthnot Honor Lecture Award: Richard Jackson, editorial director of Richard Jackson Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
