Reading, writing, arithmetic, and Web design—so goes a typical school day for many kids these days, and many of them will undoubtedly find Web-design skills vital in college and the workplace. Toward that end, Macromedia is offering new Web-based curricula and training materials to help K–12 educators learn and teach the fundamentals of Web design using powerful, professional programs such as Dreamweaver and Flash. (Visit www.macromedia.com/education, which also provides discounted prices on Macromedia software to educators.)

Rick Reece, technology educational specialist at Miami-Dade County Public Schools, calls Macromedia's training materials "the best." Students there have gained real-world experience through the Web-based training in using Macromedia's products by developing Web sites for local nonprofits, as well as their own electronic portfolios. Features include a user-friendly interface for using Fireworks, an image preparation program, animation program Flash, page-design program Dreamweaver, step-by-step tutorials, and Web-page templates to try out. "They also offer great online tutorials for teachers," says Reece. Macromedia's educator guidebooks enable schools and districts to create their own one-day professional development workshops on how to use Flash MX 2004, Dreamweaver MX 2004, Fireworks MX 2004, and Contribute 2
