Books 'N Barbers
By Staff -- School Library Journal, 3/1/2004
A book and a haircut? That's what young patrons of five Memphis barbershops encountered as part of a unique literacy initiative called Boys Booked on Barbershops. The February program, also known as B-Bob, encouraged local barbershops to create permanent reading nooks in which boys could pass the time while waiting for a haircut. B-Bob is intended to foster interest in reading, especially among African-American boys, and coincided with the 15th Annual African-American Read-In Chain, sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English.
