If you're interested in learning about the latest laws governing the provision of library services to those with disabilities, sign up for the Accessibility Basics for Librarians newsletter. Written by Jessica Brody, a lawyer at Leslie, Harris & Associates, the newsletter describes various software, magnified screens, and special furniture that libraries need to adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Members of the American Library Association can receive the April 5 to June 18 newsletter for free by e-mailing their member numbers to Kathy Mitchell at kmitchell@alawash.org with the word "Tutorial" in the subject line. Applications for Early Reading First funds are now being accepted. The reading program, especially geared for children from low-income families, is part of President Bush's 2001 No Child Left Behind Act and was created to prepare preschoolers for kindergarten by teaching them necessary language, cognitive, and early reading skills.
The application deadline is July 1.
