The Department of Health and Human Services' new Web site (www.grants.gov) makes applying for a federal grant just a click away. The official one-stop resource covers 900 programs from 26 agencies.

Users search a database for competitive grant opportunities based on subject area or agency. There's also information on how to write a successful proposal. Users can sign up to receive announcements of new grant opportunities. Applications are available in PDF format.

If you're interested in learning about the latest laws governing the provision of library services to those with disabilities, sign up for the Accessibility Basics for Librarians newsletter. Written by Jessica Brody, a lawyer at Leslie, Harris & Associates, the newsletter describes various software, magnified screens, and special furniture that libraries need to adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Members of the American Library Association can receive the April 5 to June 18 newsletter for free by e-mailing their member numbers to Kathy Mitchell at kmitchell@alawash.org with the word "Tutorial" in the subject line. Non-members must send a $30 check, along with their e-mail address, to Kathy Mitchell, American Library Association Office for Information Technology Policy, 1301 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Suite 403, Washington, DC 20004.

Applications for Early Reading First funds are now being accepted. The reading program, especially geared for children from low-income families, is part of President Bush's 2001 No Child Left Behind Act and was created to prepare preschoolers for kindergarten by teaching them necessary language, cognitive, and early reading skills.

The application deadline is July 1. For detailed information, visit the U.S. Department of Education Web site at www.ed.gov/programs/earlyreading/index.html or contact Mary Anne Lesiak, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, SW, room 3W240, Washington, DC 20202-6132, telephone (202) 260-2195, or e-mail MaryAnne.Lesiak@ed.gov.
