Boston Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon, also known as "Caveman" for his scruffy appearance, has cleaned up his look for a good cause. In a May 21 public ceremony, Damon shaved his beard to benefit the after-school homework program at the Boston Public Library. The Boston-based Gillette Company has donated $15,000 to fund the program, Damon's charity of choice.

Library spokesperson Mary Bender says they're thrilled that Damon chose to support their tutoring program, "and the shave's an added bonus." The typically clean-cut Damon, a favorite among female fans, caused a stir in February when he reported for spring training with shoulder-length hair and a beard. "It's starting to get hot," Damon told the Associated Press. But for now, he says, he's keeping his locks.
