Martin Waddell and Max Velthuijs are winners of the 2004 Hans Christian Andersen Award for writing and illustration, respectively. The awards, to be presented by the International Board on Books for Young People in September, honor the highest achievement worldwide in children's books. Waddell, from Ireland, wrote the picture book Farmer Duck (1992) for young children and Tango's Baby (1995; o.p., both Candlewick) for teens. Velthuijs, from the Netherlands, wrote and illustrated Frog and the Stranger (Morrow, 1994; o.p.) and Elephant and Crocodile (Farrar, 1990; o.p.).
