With a Little Help From Her Friends

Staff -- School Library Journal, 7/1/2004

Nelda Brangwin , a media specialist at the Cherry Valley Elementary School in Duvall, WA, was sidelined this past year by a car accident, a fractured vertebra, and cancer. But teachers and parents stepped up to continue the much-loved librarian's annual events—like Harry Potter Night, which attracted more than 1,000 attendees. Nelda's friends also managed the school's read-a-thon and prepared the food and waited tables for the literary high tea in May.

"Nelda always goes above and beyond," says Cherry Valley's principal, Darcy Becker. "She sees the school as a family, and when someone in your family is in need, you rally around them."
