Teachers on Technology

By Walter Minkel -- School Library Journal, 8/1/2004

There aren't enough classroom computers, the software could be better, and teachers could use more technology training. These are among the findings of a new nationwide survey of 1,012 classroom teachers, sponsored by technology supplier CDW Government.

Survey results, which were announced June 22 at the National Educational Computing Conference in New Orleans, revealed that 75 percent of teachers surveyed wanted more computers in their classrooms. Only 45 percent believed that the software they used was appropriate for the students they taught. Twenty-eight percent of teachers said they needed "a great deal more" training in how to use computers and software to teach at their grade level, while 51 percent felt they needed "a little more" training.

On the plus side, 83 percent of those surveyed said that a school Web site helps the education process, and 66 percent of teachers with a school Web site say that it has increased parental involvement.
