Web Site of the Month: Smithsonian Education
By Kathy Ishizuka -- School Library Journal, 9/1/2004
If you're looking for an inspiring resource to help jump-start the new school year, be sure to visit the Smithsonian Institution's Education Web site. Created to bring the Smithsonian's myriad resources directly into the classroom or home, this worthwhile site features content from 16 Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, and the Smithsonian's research centers. Separate areas designed for educators, amilies, and students offer nearly 1,000 resources, including free lesson plans, field trips, and interactive learning labs, all searchable by grade level and subject.
A Brush With History: The Smithsonian's lesson plans—as one might expect—are informative and wide-ranging, much like the venerable institution itself. For example, students can explore themes in American history with selections from the National Portrait Collection or engage the archaeological process by learning what insights candy wrappers and other "artifacts" offer us about our own classrooms. Geared for students from preschool to high school, the lesson plans also align with national education standards.
Despite the vast resources available here, the site is easy to navigate and attractively presented throughout. Even the printable lesson plans, which can otherwise be pretty drab, include quality photographs.
