Judy Blume Nabs National Book Award

By Staff -- School Library Journal, 10/1/2004

Judy Blume, whose portrayals of adolescence have attracted millions of fans—as well as censors—has been selected by the National Book Foundation for its annual medal for distinguished contributions to American letters. Blume, who wrote Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret (Atheneum, 1982) and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (Dutton, 1972), is the first children's author to receive the distinction. In 1986, she sorted through her fan mail and published Letters to Judy: What Your Kids Wish They Could Tell You (Putnam).
