The Librarian's Internet: Testing, Testing

Studying for the SAT? Check out these test-prep resources online

By Gail Junion-Metz -- School Library Journal, 10/1/2004

SAT Prep Center
www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/prep_one/prep_one.html

This page contains a wealth of excellent—and free—test-prep resources. The "Mini-SAT" tool is well worth downloading; it provides a 68-question timed practice test and student-friendly SAT tips. Consider bookmarking the link to the "SAT Question of the Day" page to help familiarize students with the test format. Created by: The staff of The College Board, Inc. Don't Miss: Be sure to print the "Full-Length Practice SAT" and "Scoring Guide" (PDF format) available at www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/prep_one/np/test.html.

ACT Test Prep
www.actstudent.org/testprep

Here's another great test-prep Web site. Most useful are the "Practice Tests," which provide a substantial set of actual test questions and answers. Created by: The staff of ACT, Inc. Don't Miss: Download the free 79-page booklet "Preparing for the ACT" (PDF format), which contains valuable test information, complete practice tests, and scoring keys.

The Online Test Page
www.saab.org

This site offers tons of practice drills that will help students prepare for both the verbal and mathematics sections of the SAT and ACT. (Also included on this site are links that will help grad students prepare for the TOEFL test.) The mathematics section includes sample test questions as well as nifty math calculation pages—Fraction Attack, ArithmAttack, and Fraction Calculator. Created by: Elias Saab, professor, University of Missouri, Columbia.

Most Important SAT Words
www.vocabulary.com/AOLtopsatwords12.html

Do your students need help with their vocabularies in order to excel on the verbal sections of the SAT and ACT? Then direct them to this site for fun, interactive word puzzles, lists of SAT vocabulary words, and links to even more word puzzles (some SAT-related, some not). Created by: Jan and Carey Cook, word-puzzle authors. Detour: Want to introduce a new SAT vocabulary word every day? Bookmark the SuperKids SAT Vocabulary Builder at www.superkids.com/aweb/tools/words/sat.

Webmath
www.webmath.com/index.html

For students who are feeling a bit shaky about the math portions of the SAT and ACT, this is a great site for extra practice. When students click on a given math subject, they'll get to try out the concept by solving problems and equations. Then they press an online button to see the results. Created by: Tom Bensky, professor, California Polytechnic State University. Don't Miss: The section "Math for Everyone" is full of interesting and useful online math tools, such as how to figure the amount of tips, compute compound/simple interest, and even determine wind chill.
