The Indian Ocean tsunami disaster has prompted a universal effort among teachers to provide students with information about the event and opportunities to help the victims.

The Discovery Channel Web site is an excellent online source, providing a range of links and visual tools to help explain the science behind one of the greatest disasters in human history. Thanks to an interactive map, students can learn how a small shift in the Earth's crust set off the deadly waves. The site's most unique element features an animated series of satellite images that show the path of the tsunami as viewed from space.

The international relief organization Save the Children also offers a wealth of tsunami-related information for teachers, parents, and children. A Teacher's Toolkit provides classroom activities to help children understand what caused the catastrophe, along with examples of how children can make a difference. "Ten Tips on How to Help Kids Cope with Disaster" addresses the inevitable emotional concerns as our children witness the ongoing tragedy in Asia.
