Learning on the Road
By Staff -- School Library Journal, 3/1/2005
Kids in Willow Springs, MO, are getting a unique learning experience, courtesy of a refurbished school bus that travels the town bringing books, games, videos, and storytimes to children of all ages. The Traveling Learning Center, equipped with cabinets, benches, and a play room, makes regular stops at day-care centers, churches, the YMCA, and even department-store parking lots. Reading teacher Sherry Owens (far right), district curriculum and instruction coordinator Jimalee James (middle), and driver Jean Turner (left) engage kids from the Little Tot's Corner Preschool and Daycare. The bus is paid for by part of a $175,000 grant from the Department of Education's Improving Literacy Through School Libraries program.
