Web Site of the Month--Cybercamps
By Kathy Ishizuka -- School Library Journal, 7/1/2005
For most kids, summer means swatting mosquitoes and chilly dips in the lake—the usual round of activities that make up camp. But other youngsters choose instead to design video games, create Web pages, or engage in other high-tech activities, in the increasingly popular option of computer camp.
One provider, Cybercamps, runs single and multi-week computer camps on university campuses nationwide, with Web-based courses that cover flash animation, robotics, game design, and more. ID Tech Camps (www.internaldrive.com) is another national outfit that, like Cybercamps, takes its curriculum very seriously—no zoning out on computer games here. Using professional software, these camps appeal to the many parents who believe that technological prowess will give their kids a leg up in school and, eventually, the working world. But there’s still fun to be had. ID Tech Camps offers gaming tournaments—during noninstructional time only—and there are outdoor activities, as well. So you’ll need to pack that bug spray, after all.
